Library Technician (Part time temporary and to establish register), Cullman County Public Library System, Cullman, Alabama
LIBRARY TECHNICIAN
(Part Time, 20 Hrs. Per Week, $7.00 per hour)

JOB SUMMARY
This is an entry-level paraprofessional position with a heavy public service component, completing various clerical work in a specific division/section of the Cullman County Public Library System. Training will be provided. Work is performed with considerable latitude for independent judgment and initiative under the direction of a Coordinator and/or the Head of Public Services or the Assistant County Librarian. This position may serve in any facility or division of the Library System, including the Public Services, Circulation/Member Services, or Support Services Divisions.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Tasks for this position may include:
*Meeting, greeting, and serving the informational needs of clients and assisting library users in finding information, use of public computers, maintenance of their library accounts, using library databases and tools, and other library services, and providing basic reference and reader’s advisory services, bibliographic instruction, and other public assistance.
*Minor facility maintenance, specifically keeping assigned work areas clean and tidy.
*Assisting in the planning for and implementation of library programs, exhibitions, and other educational activities for clients of all ages, including children.
*Assisting in collection development and collection maintenance tasks, including weeding, shelving, and shelf reading.
*Clerical work, including use of computer software and systems in the registration of users and circulation/loan of materials, copy cataloging of library materials, data entry, filing, and other similar tasks. Ability to use Microsoft Word, Excel, Internet Explorer, integrated library systems and similar programs required.
*Process library materials being added to or withdrawn from collections.
*Ability to follow instructions of supervisors, follow library policies and procedures, and work with minimal supervision.
*Ability to operate personal computers, peripheral equipment, cash registers, audiovisual equipment, and other similar tasks.
*Ability to lift and load up to 25 lbs, and manipulate loaded book trucks, shelve and obtain library materials from shelves extending up to 90” and stand for lengthy periods.
*Ability to meet, greet, and serve clients of all ages, and work with supervisors, co-workers and volunteers in a cordial and effective manner is required.
*Ability to work at a public service desk of a library facility/facilities, including nights and weekends in regular rotation.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
High School diploma with clerical training or experience required. Two years of college preferred. Bilingual abilities (ability to speak and understand Spanish as well as English) preferred.
Necessary Knowledge and Skills:
· Considerable computer skills.
· Basic knowledge of library terminology, programs, and services.
· Ability to use and explain library policies, facilities and equipment.
· Ability to communicate effectively with both adults and particularly children and young adults.
· Ability to exercise initiative, tact, and independent judgment.
· Ability to resolve problems in an effective manner.
· Ability to take supervision.
· Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, superiors, and the particularly the public.
· Ability to understand oral and written instructions.
· Ability to stand for periods of 1 hour or more and reach library materials at high and low levels (overhead and floor level).
· Physical ability to bend, stoop, twist, turn, and move materials from place to place in the library.
· Physical ability to push carts and bins loaded with library materials weighing up to 100 pounds.
· Physical ability to lift up to 25 pounds on a regular basis in the handling of library materials; may, less frequently, be required to lift up to approximately 50 pounds.
· Ability to operate county-owned vehicles in the performance of job functions. Possess a valid Alabama Driver’s License and meet the County’s Insurance Carrier’s requirements for coverage.
