I am a newcomer to 24, only started watching the series at the beginning of this season, but I certainly like it. I have even put the first season episodes on my Netflix list so I can see what I missed.
Last night's season finale was excellent, exciting, convoluted, and surprising, as usual. Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland) continues his search for Marwan, in order to learn the target location for the nuclear warhead launched by the terrorists. His team captures a young female accomplice of Marwan and Jack convinces her to give up Marwan's plans. While capturing this girl, the team rescues Tony (Carlos Bernard). Many viewers were predicting Tony might be killed off; I am glad he wasn't, he is my second favorite character, after Jack.
Jack and his team find Marwan attempting to escape in a helicopter from atop a Los Angeles skyscraper. They block his takeoff by hovering their helicopter over his, then shoot into the copter, flushing Marwan. Jack chases him over the rooftop; Marwan dives for the railing at the edge of the roof, and is caught as he goes over by Jack, who holds him by one hand. Marwan pulls a knife and slashes Jack's hand, then plunges to his death.
Meanwhile, in Washington, the weak and waffling President decides to eliminate Jack, rather than turn him over to the Chinese, when the Chinese learn that Jack lead the team that accidentally killed the Chinese consul. The former President (the man with the wonderful voice, Dennis Haysbert), who has been assisting the current President, calls Jack and warns him to leave the CTU, as the Secret Service officer sent to arrest him is really being sent to kill him.
Jack is assisted in escaping from the CTU by Tony and his former wife Michelle Dressler (Reiko Aylesworth), after they had helped him fake his death. Jack had attempted to renew his romance with Audrey (Kim Raver), who told him she could never live with him after the events of the day.
At the end of the two hours, we see Jack walking along railroad tracks, into the sunset, his destination and future unknown. A strong finale, well written and acted.
When I first started watching this series, the split screen scenes, and furious pace of the show was confusing and hard to follow, but I quickly learned to love it. One of the best television series I have ever seen, one of my all time top ten.
